Along the coast small groupsspoke many versions of the algonquin language. These people recall the Chowanoc amd Pasqoutank tribe living north of Albemarle Sound. The Tuscarora domanated the Coastal Plain in the 1500s! The tribe had about 15 large villages each with 300 to 500 people in each. The word "Tuscarora" means "Hemp Gathers". One early exploree noted that they had extremely flat bodies. The infant of the tribe were laced to a flat board at birth, to give them correct posture they ended up with virtually perfect limbs. these ar the native indians that the paint John White painted in his water colors.

There were dozens of differents groups passed the fall line. These include the Waxhaw, Saxahaw. Yet the largest of the groups was the Catawba. This word sounds like " lik ka pa tu" which means "where the river divides". These indians or native americans ar related to the Sioux tribes of the great plains.

The Cherokee has been the most popular indians group in North Carolina history for there size and there history. Orignally they're ansters lived in the upper Ohio River. They where driven from home because of fighting with the Iroquosis. They call themselves the " yun wi ya" or " the people". When the whites first came they controlled the mountain region of 40,000 square miles. Including Wwestern North Carolina , eastern TN. , northern AL. and Geogria , and West Virgina .
