In the mid 1800s North Carolina was a slave state but not a dominant one one meaning that many Noth Carolinians were yeomen meaning that they grew there own food just to eat and survive. Most of the slaves in North Carolina lived on plantations which were big farm like homes with a master and his family and little building around it for the slaves. There were different types of slaves the ones who cooked the ones who farmed but the luckiest ones were the house slaves which took care of the inner house, many slaves were underfed and abused.
