On June 30, 1831, he married Mary Ann Randolph Custis. They had seven children. All three of their sons served in the Confederate army. George Washington Custis and William Henry Fitzhugh ("Rooney") attained the rank of Major General and Robert E. Lee, Jr., that of Captain. The latter served as a private in the Rockbridge Artillery at the Battle of Antietam.
During the Mexican War, Robert E. Lee was promoted to Colonel due to his gallantry and distinguished conduct in performing vital scouting missions.
In 1852, he became Superintendent of the Military Academy. In 1855, Secretary of War Jefferson Davis transferred Lee from staff to line and was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel 2nd Cavalry. He was then sent to West Texas, where he served from 1857-1861. In February of 1861, General Winfield Scott recalled Lee from Texas when the lower South seceded from the Union.
Politically, Robert E. Lee was a Whig. Ironically, he was attached strongly to the Union and to the Constitution. He entertained no special sympathy for slavery.
When Virginia withdrew from the Union, Lee resigned his commission rather than assist in suppressing the insurrection. His resignation was two days following the offer of Chief of Command of U.S. forces under Scott. He then proceeded to Richmond to become Commander-in-Chief of the military and naval forces of Virginia. When these forces joined Confederate services, he was appointed Brig. Gen. in the Regular Confederate States.
Lee returned to Richmond in March of 1862 to become military advisor to President Davis. Whenever he had a plan, General Lee took the initiative and acted at once. Cutting off supplies and reinforcements executed by Jackson at Seven Pines was a successful Confederate venture. He also stopped McClellan's threat to Richmond during the Seven Days Battle (June 26-July 2, 1861). At the Battle of Second Manassas, Lee defeated Pope. At the Battle of Antietam, his Northern thrust was checked by McClellan; however, he repulsed Burnside at Fredericksburg in December of 1862. In May of 1863, Gen. Lee defeated Gen. Hooker at Chancellorsville, but was forced onto the strategic defensive after Gettysburg in July. On April 9, 1865, Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at the village of Appomattox Court House.
After the surrender, Lee returned to Richmond. He assumed the presidency of Washington College (now Washington and Lee University). His example of conduct for thousands of ex-Confederates made him a legend even before his death on October 12, 1870. General Robert E. Lee is buried at Lexington, Virginia.

As the Civil War reached its peak, Grant sought to win control of the Mississippi Valley. In February 1862, he took Fort Donelson in Tennessee, which was the first Union victory of strategic importance. When the Confederate commander asked for terms, Grant replied, "No terms except an unconditional and immediate surrender can be accepted." The Confederates surrendered, and President Lincoln promoted Grant to major general of volunteers in 1863.
As the fierce battles of the Civil War continued, some began to question General Grant's military leadership. At Shiloh, Grant fought one of the bloodiest battles in the West. Some called for him to be replaced. President Lincoln fended off demands that Grant be removed by saying, "I can't spare this man — he fights." (From the Ulysses S. Grant home page.)
With President Lincoln's support, Grant was determined to move ahead to victory. He captured Vicksburg, the key city on the Mississippi River, which cut the Confederacy in two. He then broke the Confederate hold on Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Lincoln appointed Grant General-in-Chief of the Union Army in March 1864. Grant directed Sherman to drive through the South while he used the Army of the Potomac to pin down General Lee's Army. After the Overland campaign in the spring of 1864, City Point, (the city is named Hopewell today) Virginia, served as General Grant's Headquarters of the Armies of the United States. From City Point, Grant directed the movements of the various Union troops across the country. His primary goal was to destroy General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. As Sherman and Grant moved farther into the Confederate strongholds, it became clear that the final battles of the Civil War were at hand.
President Lincoln, anxious for the war to end, traveled to City Point and Grant's headquarters. From March 20 to April 8, 1865, the President met with Grant and his officers to discuss the final push into Petersburg. They also talked about the conditions for reuniting the nation after the war.
At the end of March, a "war council" conference was held between the President, Generals Grant and Sherman, and other key military leaders. They discussed battle plans that they hoped would end the war. Grant then moved his headquarters into Petersburg so he would be near the final battleground. President Lincoln stayed at City Point, where it is reported that he dreamed of his own death. Interestingly enough, Lincoln did not tell anyone at City Point of his strange dream while he was there. Instead, he reportedly first mentioned it to his wife and others during a social gathering, days later when he returned to Washington, D.C.
General Grant's military strategy was on target as he defeated General Lee at Petersburg. Finally, on April 9, 1865, Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House. Grant wrote generous terms of surrender that helped to begin the process of uniting the nation again. A main part of Grant's terms included provisions that prevented future trials for treason. Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy, was arrested for treason and spent three years in prison at Fort Monroe. But Davis never went to trial on these treason charges.
After the Civil War, Grant served as the Secretary of War from August 12, 1867 to January 14, 1868.

I got that devilish flow, rock ‘n’ roll, no halo
We party rock, yeah, that’s the crew that I’m reppin’

Everybody just have a good time
And we gonna make you lose your mind
Everybody just have a good time
Party rock is in the house tonight
Everybody just have a good time
And we gonna make you lose your mind
    We just wanna see ya
    Shake that!
    Every day I’ shufflin’
    Shufflin shufflin
    Shufflin shufflin
    Step up fast
And be the first girl to make me throw this cash
We get money, don’t be mad now, stop
    Hatin’ is bad
One more shot for us, another round
Please fill up my cup, don’t mess around
We just wanna see, you shake it now
Now you wanna be, you’re naked now
    Get up, get down
Put your hands up to the sound
    Get up, get down
Put your hands up to the sound
    Get up, get down
Put your hands up to the sound
Put your hands up to the sound
Put your hands up to the sound
    Get up (9x)
Put your hands up to the sound, to the sound
Put your hands up, put your hands up, put your hands up, put your hands up
Party rock is in the house tonight
    (Put your hands up)
Everybody just have a good time
    (Put your hands up)
And we gonna make you lose your mind
    (Put your hands up)
Everybody just have a good, good, good time

In Fayetteville a Fort Bragg solider gave himself up to police for charges of a shooting of a retired Major last month. Fayetteville policemen Gavin MacRoberts said that “Staff Sgt. Clyde Terrell Cobb turned himself in on Thursday”. He is charged with voluntary manslaughter in for the shooting of retired Commander Sgt. Maj. Raymond Thompson. He was found dead in a car at the Reserve at Carrington Place apartments on September 9th. Police said “Cobb also was shot during the confrontation and was treated at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center then released”. Cobb is with the 112th Signal Brigade. We’re not sure if he has an attorney. I think he should go to jail like an every other person that murders.

On September 29, Antwan Maurice Pittman was charged with 1st degree murder for alleged killing of Tamara Nicholson in 2009. Antwan said to the court “you all are sending an innocent man to prison for life," "I did not kill that woman." Antwan’s aunt Karin Pittman told the WRAL reporters that the jury got it wrong, everybody wants justice, but I don't think justice was served today”. Tamara Nicholson was 1 of women who were missing when their bodies were found over a four-year period across 3counties. Locations close to where Pittman had lived at some point in his life. All of these women that were found dead were known at Holly Street which itself is known for prostitution and drugs. Edgecombe County police wouldn’t comment Thursday on where the other investigations stand but their families have said they are convinced that Pittman is responsible for their losses too. I think he didn’t do it the cops just need someone tho blame so they blame it on one person which saves a lot of work.
    State
In Winston-Salem President Obama told the citizens of NC that this state will be very important when it comes to the next election. On a Thursday interview with WXII-TV Obama said he's planning on "actively campaigning”. The state as he hopes to win another term in the White House. He’s already visited North Carolina twice in the four months, promoting his solutions to the country's going unemployment problem. North Carolina has tilted Republican in recent decades Obama won the state in 2008. He had opinion for some of the state's top college basketball programs. The president expects good things from Duke and North Carolina, but says Wake Forest still has some rebuilding to do. I think he’s just sucking up to use for a vote.

In Libson, Portugal an American killer and alleged hijacker who was a fugitive for 41 years should have the rest of his jail time in Portugal. Where he was captured instead of being extradited to the United States. George Wright broke out of Bayside State Prison in Leesburg, New Jersey on 9/9/70. After 8 years for killing a man in a 1962 gas station robbery. George now at 68 was found living in Portugal was there for about 30 years and has a Portugal wife and children. His lawyer said Wright will “oppose extradition on the grounds that he fears reprisals for his past membership in the militant U.S. group”. He did not elaborate. I think he should be locked up for life.

In Berlin, Namibian tribal leaders took possession Friday of the skulls of 20 of their countrymen, taken by German colonial forces more than a century ago for racial experiments. The handing over of the skulls a reminder of Germany's short-lived past in Africa. This included the bloody suppression of a Herero and Nama uprising between 1904 and 1908 that left tens of thousands dead. The heads of 4 females and 16 males, including a young boy of about 3, were took from their bodies and preserved in formaldehyde with faces, skin and hair. Researchers said it is not clear how the people died. They were possibly victims of German forces in Namibia at the time, or died in a German-run camp. The remains arrived in Berlin between 1909-1914, scientists tried to prove the "racial superiority" of white Europeans to black Africans. I Think this is wrong for so many reasons but right for science.
    Business
Americans earned less last month, the 1st decline in nearly 2years. With less income, consumers could cut back on a fragile economy. Consumers spent more in August. Consumer spending rose just 0.2 percent, after a more robust 0.7 percent gain in July. Many tapped savings to cover the steeper costs. And most of the increase in spending went to pay higher prices for food and gas. When adjusted for inflation, August consumer spending was flat. Stocks fell after the report's release. The data told “more evidence that households are in quite a bind," said Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics. I think it’s gonna take more than one president’s sentence.
